How to Price Your Custom Cakes

by Chef Sarah Mitchellโ€ขFebruary 20, 2026โ€ข12 min read

The Pricing Problem

Most home bakers dramatically undercharge for their work, often pricing based on emotion rather than math. Professional pricing ensures you cover costs, pay yourself fairly, and build a sustainable business.

The Professional Pricing Formula

Price = (Ingredients + Labor + Overhead) x Profit Multiplier

1. Ingredient Costs

Track every ingredient to the gram. Create a master spreadsheet with costs per unit for all your staple ingredients. A standard 8-inch, 3-layer cake typically costs AED 80-150 in ingredients in the UAE.

2. Labor Time

Track your time honestly โ€” including baking, cooling, decorating, and cleanup. Pay yourself at least AED 75-150 per hour depending on your skill level and market.

3. Overhead Costs

Include electricity, equipment depreciation, packaging, delivery, marketing, and insurance. A common rule of thumb is adding 15-25% of direct costs.

4. Profit Multiplier

Apply a multiplier of 1.3-1.5x to ensure business growth. This covers unexpected costs, enables investment in new equipment, and builds financial cushion.

UAE Market Rates (2026)

  • Basic decorated cake (8-inch): AED 250-400
  • Fondant-covered cake: AED 400-700
  • Wedding cake (per tier): AED 500-1,500
  • Cupcakes (per dozen): AED 120-250
